On Taking Care of One's Voice, and the Importance of Voice Branding

Hello mga ka-Kool Voice! Now we're about to discuss some highlights of the Day 3 of CVAP Batch 12 training!

Ms. Janeane Santos presented her lectures on the third day of Certified Voice Artists Program training. First, she explained about how a brand name brings a positive vibe to any voice artist. Then she explained the importance of practicing in any field, be it for a beginner or a veteran in the voice artist industry.

One tip to be able practice is to record oneself. In this way, a voice artist can hear how they sound, and they can give themselves some necessary feedback. Ms. Janeane pointed out that our voices sound different from how we hear it, to how others actually hear it.

Tongue twisters are also important in practicing, and I find myself doing it occasionally. I have re-learned that this is essential in helping improve one's pronunciation. I also loved na may sample tong twisters na prinisinta si Ms. Janeane during the middle of the Part 1 ng Day 3 session! Reading sample scripts was also discussed, bagaman never ko pa yan nagawa nang madalas even before. I will consider to do that as part of my practice, however, in the near future. Symbols are also necessary para alam ng voice actors kung saan gagawa ng stop or pause or gumawa ng emphasis or in order to raise or lower their pitch while reading scripts.

May acting techniques ding dini-discuss. I got interested sa "human sound effects" bagaman di ko naman alam ang lahat ng mga ganon. Lead-in lines are also necessary sa voice acting, kagaya ng monologues. Through human sound effects, mas nagiging buhay na buhay ang mga linyang binibigkas ng voice actors.

Voice care is also crucial. Though I do drink a lot of water, I had learned at AT LEAST 16 glasses of water is required for voice artists. At best 8 to 12 glasses ang naiinom ko araw-araw. I'm used to drinking water at room temperature anyways, dahil mahirap na kapag na-dehydrate o kaya nakainom ng sobrang malamig na tubig, and there are instances when my voice was strained. Guess I'll need to stay away from some of my favorite foods (iced coffee, cheesecake, laing, and certain alcoholic drinks) pag kailangan kong gumawa ng voice work! Voice rest for 15 minutes should also be considered! Hindi ko naman kinaugalian ang shouting and whispering but it should also be avoided.

Several pointers were also discussed in creating different character voices. I first came across Papa Lem TV sa pamamagitan ng kanyang TikTok content, as shared by one of my former officemates. Nagkaroon ako ng mga idea how different character voices are utilized depende sa script, tone and mood ng material.

This is something, however, that I had been doing as a hobby before joining CVAP. I once tried to speak in a child-like voice and an "old man" voice whenever I got bored sa bahay. Hahaha. Anyway, this is what I can say na naging pinaka-participative ako of all sessions at that point. Na-discuss din ang pag-setup ng different social media platforms for voice artists to promote their voice work and demo reels. Maraming tips na na-discuss that I can apply in order to continuously promote my future material on social media.

Can't wait to share more things in store, guys!
